First United Methodist Church of Warren
cherishes your presence among us. We provide the following
information to make you comfortable and to explain our church.
HISTORY: Our local church dates back to 1845 when Oliver Barton, his brother, and their wives met in the home of friends to worship God. Their fellowship attracted others; the circle grew and the Methodist Episcopal Church of Warren was established November 28, 1845. They continued to meet in homes for 3 years before moving into a local schoolhouse. After several homes, several moves, and name changes, the current church was built in 1957 (?).OUR ARCHITECTURE : Our sanctuary represents a tabernacle tent, signifying the faith journey of God’s people. Although churches typically have a steeple or spire placed over the alter and the priest, we have a high line roof over the entire congregation which serves as one continuous steeple over all who worship here; this signifies the Protestant thought that "every member is his own priest." The window walls completely surrounding the sanctuary remind us that Christian faith must continuously reach out to others; it cannot be self-contained and continue to exist. Therefore, while proud of our history, our focus is on the present and future, being faithful Disciples of Christ.RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP: The Friendship pads are located in the hymnal rack at the end of the pew. These help us to know one another and they allow the church staff to know you were here.PRAYER CARDS: In the hymnal racks on each pew are green cards on which you may write your prayer concerns. Place the cards in the box at the exit in the sanctuary. Your concerns will be prayed over by the Prayer Team and during worship each week.SUNDAY SCHOOL: Adult Education is offered at 9:00 a.m. in the Library. Church School for children, age 3 years through 5th grade begins during the 10:30 a.m. service, after A Time With Our Young People, in the Children's Worship Center in the Lower Level.NURSERY FOR INFANTS: Professionally staffed nursery nursery care is available for newborn babies up through age two during worship services. The nursery is located between the church office and the sanctuary.RESTROOMS: Handicapped-accessible restrooms are located on the first floor in the main hallway at the center of the building and in the basement. The elevator entrance is in the program area.BECOMING A MEMBER: If you belong to another church, you can become a member of First United Methodist Church by a transfer letter.
